Obiettivi formativi
The course aims at giving the theoretical and applied tools for answering these questions through the lenses of labour economics. The student will have acquired, at the end, knowledge and understanding of the labour market functioning. The student will be able of applying them and of making judgements thanks to the acquired communication and learning skills.

What does the future of work look like for people? What about gender equality in education and the labour market? I focus on gender differences, since one of the more prevalent topics in labour economics deals with gender inequalities in the labour market in terms of the gender participation, wage and representation gaps.

The exam consists in a written test and, for students who actively participate in the discussion, part of the test can be substituted by a presentation in class of one paper chosen by the student from the reading list I suggest. The course is intended for both the curricula in economics and development economics.
Programma esteso
What is the future of work for people? What about gender equality in education and in the labour market? What are the impacts of economic shocks - the pandemic, climate changes - on gender differences? What is the state of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5, “Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls” and SDG 8, “Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productiveemployment and decent work for all”? I focus on gender differences, since one of the more prevalent topics in labour economics deals with gender inequalities in the labour market in terms of the gender participation, wage and representation gaps. In the first part of the course I illustrate how economic models can be applied to labour market phenomena, such as labour supply and participation, labour demand by firms, the formation of human capital and wage determination, discrimination and migration. In parallel, I present some practical applications on the use of data to test empirically fundamental econometric relationships in the labour markets. The second part of the course is more policy oriented and I focus on gender issues in the labour markets of developed and developing countries. A number of topics will be dealt with on the basis of a list of seminal contributions in the literature, such as gender gaps in education and earnings, discrimination, women’s empowerment in the household and the effects of climate shocks and migration.
